Now You See Me 2 (2016)

Now You See Me 2 is the sequel to the 2013 hit film Now You See Me, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Radcliffe, and Morgan Freeman. The film continues the story of the Four Horsemen, a group of illusionists who use their skills for Robin Hood-style justice, exposing corruption and corporate greed.

Set a year after the events of the first film, the Four Horsemen—J. Daniel Atlas (Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Harrelson), Jack Wilder (Franco), and new recruit Lula (Caplan)—have been in hiding under the guidance of the secretive magic society known as "The Eye." FBI agent Dylan Rhodes (Ruffalo), who is secretly a member of The Eye and was revealed to be helping the Horsemen in the first film, continues to protect them from law enforcement.

The Horsemen re-emerge to expose the unethical practices of tech magnate Owen Case, but their plan is hijacked. During their performance, they are unexpectedly exposed and teleported (via a trap) to Macau, China. There, they meet Walter Mabry (Radcliffe), a wealthy and eccentric tech prodigy who faked his own death. Mabry forces the Horsemen to steal a powerful data chip known as “The Stick” from a high-security facility. The chip can decrypt and access any computer system in the world—a tool that could give immense power to whoever controls it.

While attempting the heist, the Horsemen must rely on complex illusions, sleight-of-hand, and teamwork. One of the film’s most memorable sequences is the card-passing scene, where the group conceals the chip (disguised as a playing card) from armed guards during a security search. This elaborate scene showcases their coordination and magical expertise.

Meanwhile, Dylan travels to Macau to rescue the team and confront his past. He visits the old magic shop once owned by his father, Lionel Shrike, a magician who died performing a dangerous escape act. In Macau, Dylan is captured and brought to Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine), the vengeful businessman from the first film, and Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman), the former magic debunker. However, it’s revealed that Thaddeus is not working against Dylan but is actually aiding him to honor his father’s legacy.

As the plot unfolds, the Horsemen turn the tables on Mabry. They use a combination of misdirection, decoys, and a staged performance aboard a private jet to expose Mabry’s crimes and clear their names. In a spectacular finale over the River Thames in London, the Horsemen reveal the truth to a global audience, exposing Owen Case’s corruption and Walter Mabry’s schemes.

The film ends with Dylan and the Horsemen being fully accepted into The Eye. They are led to a secret chamber beneath a famous London magic shop, where they are welcomed as true members and given access to deeper magical knowledge and greater responsibilities. The final moments suggest that the story of the Horsemen is far from over.

Now You See Me 2 builds on the intrigue and energy of the original with more global locations, stylish visuals, and bigger illusions. While it leans more heavily into fantasy and spectacle, the film continues to explore themes of trust, deception, and the blurred line between reality and illusion. Though met with mixed critical reviews, audiences praised the film for its entertaining performances and creative magic sequences.
